Arizona is known as the "Grand Canyon State" after its leading attraction, but abounds in other famous sights, including red rock monuments and canyons, prehistoric ruins, and magnificent cactus deserts. Historic Route 66 traverses the northern part, stringing together iconic western sights like the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, and Meteor Crater, with side trips north and south to "Indian Country", Anasazi cliff dwellings, and of course the Grand Canyon. The southern part features amazing cactus forests, copper mining boom towns, wild west Tombstone, and mountain ranges rising like islands from the desert

Arizona is my standard midwinter getaway destination, when I feel the need of sun and warmth. Spring in the desert is also delightful and the higher elevations prolong the season until early summer. I am running out of new places to go in Arizona, but many deserve a second look (or third, or fourth...). I need to devote more attention to the Grand Canyon, hiking down below the rim and maybe taking a raft trip.

Three regions span the state from east to west:

• Northern Arizona consists of Grand Canyon National Park and the vast Navajo Indian Reservation, including Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly National Monument, and is traversed by Route 66 (Flagstaff Arizona, don't forget Winona)

• A belt across the middle of the state, where the high plateaus drop away into the desert and most of the people live, I call simply Phoenix and Central Arizona

• The rest of the state is Cactus Country, with Saguaro National Park flanking the city of Tucson, plus Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument down on the Mexican border, "island" mountains rising from low desert, and historic mining towns.
