Missouri was the quintessential border state, torn between North and South in the Civil War, and between the settled east and the empty west in the era of covered wagons.

The various branches of the Oregon Trail began on the east bank of the Missouri River, as did the Pony Express route. The 14 panoramas presented here show the two most important of these: Independence and Saint Joseph. I regret that I was too pressed for time to also shoot in Kansas City, it may be a long time before I get that far east again.
