Nevada, the Silver State, was founded on mining but is now better known for gambling and entertainment. Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the nation with new casinos and hotels appearing constantly; Reno in the north is a smaller version with Lake Tahoe nearby. But the true soul of Nevada is found in the vast spaces between: the basin and range, ranchland and desert, the "loneliest road" and the historic mining towns.

I have poked into most corners of Nevada, taking panoramas and enjoying the vast spaces. I drive across Nevada almost every year on my way somewhere else, so the parts that have eluded me are definitely off the beaten track - the Jarbidge Mountains on the Idaho border, plus the higher mountain ranges.

I have divided Nevada into two regions:

• Northern and Central Nevada, which includes Reno and Lake Tahoe, the Comstock mining area, some magnificent Basin and Range country, and Highway 50 - the Loneliest Road in America;

• And Las Vegas and Southern Nevada, is lower and hotter, with red rock oucrops and cliffs, and a stretch of the Colorado River.
