New Mexico claims to be "The Land of Enchantment". The northwest quarter of the state features a unique mix and fusion of cultures: the original Indians, many still living in their ancient stone or adobe pueblos such as Zuni and Taos; Hispanic settlement along the Rio Grande dating back to the seventeenth century, characterized by the distinctive adobe architecture of towns like Santa Fe; and the white or Anglo population of cities, ranches, and mines. The three cultures share a dramatic landscape of mountains and high desert valleys dotted with prehistoric ruins. In the south the landscape opens up with wider valleys and deeper deserts, flattening out in the east onto the Great Plains.
