This is the far northeastern corner of California, lightly populated and most of it little visited. Lassen Volcanic National Park gets the most attention, along with MacArthur-Burney Falls State Park and Lava Beds National Monument. Lassen Peak erupted just a hundred years ago and the area still bubbles and fumes with sulfurous hot springs and steam vents.

There is much to see - this is a huge area filled with volcanoes and lava fields, clear cold springs and famous trout streams, lava tube caves, lakes and forests. The Modoc Indian War of 1872 was fought here, and Ishi, the "last wild Indian in North America" held out alone, hidden in the rugged foothill canyons, until 1911. The land remains mostly wild and there are neither cities nor major highways.
