I have divided Northern California into seven regions, totaling about 1500 panoramas:

• Redwood National and State Parks

• Mount Shasta and the Klamath-Trinity Mountains

• Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Modoc Plateau

• Northern California Coast and Coast Ranges

• The Sacramento Valley

• Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and Mother Lode Gold Country

• Marin and the North Bay Counties

Northern California is famous for its redwood forests, fine wines, Victorian towns, the rugged coast, towering volcanoes, two national parks and a national seashore, famous ski resorts, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento the state capital, and the Mother Lode gold country. As defined here it runs north from the Golden Gate, the delta, and the Tuolumne River on the north side of Yosemite. (The city of San Francisco, the San Joaquin delta, and Yosemite belong to Central California).

This "state" of Northern California, as I have defined it, begins within sight of where I Iive, and contains some of my favorite places. I travel throughout this region year-around - day trips to Marin, weekends on the Sonoma/Mendocino coast, and longer trips to the redwoods and Klamath-Cascade mountains. I often pass through the Gold Country on my way to the higher mountains, but in 2012 made a special effort to document this important slice of California's history and geography.

• Northern California begins with the Redwood National and State Parks and adjacent areas, extending from the Oregon border down the coast to Trinidad.

• The vast jumble of northern mountains are covered in two regions: Mount Shasta and the Klamath-Trinity Mountains in the center and west;

• and Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Modoc Plateau in the northeast.

• The Northern California Coast and North Coast Ranges region extends along the coast from Humboldt Bay down to the outskirts of the Bay Area, plus the Redwood Highway along the Eel River and adjacent mountains.

• The Sacramento Valley is the northern half of the Great Central Valley.

• The Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and Mother Lode Gold Country region covers all the foothills and mountains from south of Mount Lassen down to the northern border of Yosemite, including most of the famous Gold Country along Highway 49.

• Finally, the last stretch of coast and the last tier of ridges and valleys forms Marin and the North Bay Counties, including Point Reyes National Seashore, the Golden Gate Headlands. and the Napa Valley .
