The public image of the Dakotas is of endless wheatfields, and South Dakota does have a lot of that. But in the southwest corner are the Black Hills, a unique outlier of the Rocky Mountains, offering strikingly different landscapes with a cluster of national park properties and famous sights. My first trip there was in 2008 and I was impressed. I returned in summer 2011 to finish my coverage of the Black Hills area, but blundered into the Sturgis motorcycle rally and decided to leave abruptly - noise pollution and bikes everywhere!

The guidebook to the Black Hills and Badlands includes historic mining towns such as Deadwood and Lead, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park with the largest herd of buffalo anywhere, and Badlands National Park
