Napa Valley and Mare Island Trips
May 8 to 10 and 12-13, 2013

This was a weekend trip to celebrate the coming of spring in the coast ranges. We actually stayed in the same place for two nights, very unusual. It was the last of four trips to fill gaps in my coverage within half a day's drive of home

Three days, 23 panoramas in two days shooting.

The Napa Valley is an easy drive from home, we arrived early and set up our home-away-from-home at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. The air was mild, the camp area quiet, we just took it easy and read, then cooked dinner and went to bed early.

The campground is in a transition zone, from redwoods along the creek on one side, through oak forest, to grassland and chaparral on the other side, all within a hundred yards.

The park consists of two sections, an old resort with a popular swimming pool and the campground backed by an extensive natural area. The other block contains the historic Bale Grist Mill, a quarter mile away. We hiked the trail connecting the two, up over a ridge and down the mill creek.

There was a big concert in Napa that night, and most of the campsites had been reserved, so we had to move to a new site. The rangers were on high alert, expecting late arrivals and rowdy behavior. As it turned out, hardly anybody showed up and we could have stayed put.

A brilliant day in the beautiful Napa Valley. I shot panos in Calistoga, at the Beringer Winery, and of the Greystone winery and Culinary Institute of America. On the way home we had a brief look at Vallejo and Mare Island.

These were day trips to Mare Island in Vallejo, just across Carquinez Strait from home.

The Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first on the west coast, founded in 1853, and a huge industrial operation until decommissioned in 1996. I spent two days documenting it with panoramas, both the former naval shipyard with its support and residential buildings, and the Mare Island Preserve natural area in the old ammunition bunker area at the south end of the island.
