Sue Grafton moved from Kentucky to Santa Monica in 1961 after earning a college degree in English literature. For many years she wrote televison screenplays (including dramatizations of Agatha Christie stories) and fantasized about ways to kill her ex-husband. In 1982 she began her series of "alphabet mysteries" with A Is for Alibi. She intends to keep writing until she reaches "Z is for Zero" and refuses to allow her works to be adapted for television.
The mystery stories revolve around private investigator Ms. Kinsey Millhone and are set in Santa Theresa, in reality Santa Barbara, where Grafton lives.
