Escalante Interagency Visitor Center

This statue represents the Great Basin Collared Lizard, found only west of the Colorado River. A similar species, the Eastern Collared Lizard, is found east of the Colorado. The extreme barrier of the Colorado canyons is thought to have kept the two species separate enough to have remained distinct.

On the Hogback above Calf Creek

The 37 mile stretch of Highway 12 between Boulder and Torrey was the last link in Utah's highway system and was not completely paved until 1985. This stretch runs along a narrow ridge top known as the Hogback.

Alpine grassland and aspen on Boulder Mountain

Alpine vegetation at the 9300 foot elevation viewpoint on the east slopes of Boulder Mountain. The mountain rises to 11,317 ft (3,449 m) east of here, accessible only by unpaved roads and jeep tracks.

Boulder Mountain viewpoint above Capitol Reef

Water from Boulder Mountain is piped to a reservoir at the east base of the mountains and used to irrigate fields on the vast Sandy Ranch east of the Waterpocket Fold. This road over Bulder Mountain wasn't paved until 1985.
