Fishing Cone is a hot spring submerged in Yellowstone Lake

One of the classic stories about the wonders of Yellowstone is that you could catch a trout in the lake, reel it in, then turn around and cook it in a hot spring without even taking it off the hook. Fishing Cone was the most famous spot where this could actually have been done, and features in many early tourist photos.

The Yellowstone Lake Hotel dates from 1891. Though very grand, it makes no effort to coordinate with the natural landscape the way many western park lodges do.

Fishing Bridge crosses the Yellowstone River where it exits Yellowstone Lake

The Fishing Bridge stretch of the Yellowstone River is where Yellowstone Lake's cuththroat trout spawn, and at certain times of year one can see thousands of them from the bridge. Fishing has always been allowed in national parks (but not hunting) and for many years there would be a line of anglers standing shoulder to shoulder on this bridge, hauling them out. This had a predictable impact on the fish population and has been prohibited since 1973.

Artist Point Yellowstone - One

The most popular viewpoint on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Artists Point has good lines of sight both up and down river. The photographic challenge for me here was to show both the scenery and the numerous people enjoying it.

My own personal buffalo herd

My favorite panorama taken on this trip was a pleasant surprise. In an effort to get away from the crowds and get a 360 without an obvious road in it, I parked where there was only room for one vehicle, then hiked a short distance away over a hilltop. When I looked down the other side I saw a small herd of bison (buffalo). For just long enough to take this panorama I was the only one there to see them - it was my own personal buffalo herd.

I estimated as many as a thousand bison in sight

Here in the Lamar Valley, I estimated that maybe a thousand bison were in sight at once. Bison have something of the nobility of elk or wild horses, but also the stolid stupidity of cows. Their sheer bulk is impressive, especially the bulls with their huge heads and manes.
