Sand Lake Beach and estuary

Sand Lake is something of a paradox, with peaceful natural beach, estuary, and dunes, adjoining a busy and very noisy off-road vehicle area. The campground is very nice, but be ready for a constant parade of dune buggies, motorcycles and ATV's.

Daley Lake viewpoint at Neskowin

A broad view area at the north end of Neskowin gives a nice introduction to this pleasant vacation community. A small freshwater lake and marsh is trapped between the dunes and the first coastal ridge.

Boiler Bay, between Lincoln City and Depoe Bay

In 1910 the steamer J. Marhoffer wrecked, burned, and exploded in the cove seen here. The rusty remains of the ship's boiler can still be seen at low tide, hence the name. The broad grassy headland is an excellent place for whale and storm watching.

Cape Foulweather viewpoint, 500 Feet above the ocean

When Captain James Cook of the Royal Navy explored the Pacific coast in 1778 this was the first prominent point of land he saw. He named it after the weather that day, during a March storm. It is a basalt cliff rising 500 feet from the ocean and looks down on the Otter Crest area.

In the Lookout Gift Shop at Cape Foulweather

Opened in 1937 as a coffee shop, the Lookout Gift Shop clings to the cliff top at Cape Foulweather. Thick concrete walls are pinned into the basalt bedrock with steel rods. It affords a fine place to enjoy the view despite winds that may reach 100 mph during storms.

Devils Churn overlook at Cape Perpetua

The erosive power of heavy surf along this steep stretch of coast has excavated along the line of a natural fault in the basalt. The Devils Churn began as a sea cave, which has been unroofed by continuing erosion.

Between Heceta Head and the Oregon Sea Lion Caves

A good view of the "brown tide" that sometimes occurs on the Oregon coast in late summer. It is a natural occurrence of phytoplankton piling up because of prevailing west winds.
