Buttonwood Canal at Flamingo

Buttonwood Canal was dredged to provide direct access from Flamingo to a network of canoe trails. The change in water flow patterns was devastating to the natural environment and the mouth of the canal is now regulated by a small dam.

Coffee-colored water at the Hells Bay canoe trail

A circuitous canoe trail begins here at the Flamingo Road and leads to several overnight sleeping platforms known as "chickees'. The brown water is a natural product of the rich organic environment of the swamps.

The Hells Bay canoe launch is a bit forbidding

When I first drove past here I thought the sign must have been misplaced. But the canoe launch really is through this minimal opening in the mangrove forest.
