Monument to Andrew Young and the Civil Rights Movement in the old plaza at St Augustine

This intersection is named "Andrew Young Crossing" after a dramatic event in the Civil Rights movement. Young was leading a group of 300 peaceful protesters and was repeatedly beaten to the ground by a white mob. His footrpints are now represented in bronze in the coquina sidewalk.

Among the many historic buildings on St George Street in St Augustine is the oldest wooden schoolhouse in Florida, built soon after British troops burned the city in 1702. The wood used was bald cypress and red cedar, both very resistant to decay.
