Steamboat Natchez pulls into its dock at the foot of Toulouse Street

The Natchez is an authentic steam-powered sternwheeler. The ninth steamboat of that name, it was built in 1975 with a steel hull but an engine from 1925 and many details salvaged from older vessels. The paddlewheel is 25 feet in diameter and actually powers the boat. A classic design, it has three decks but only draws six feet of water.

The Moon Walk on the Mississippi River

For most of the 20th century New Orleans was walled off from the river by railroad tracks and warehouses. In 1976 Mayor "Moon" Landrieu managed to clear a strip in front of Jackson Square so the city could finally look out upon its river. The pedestrian way has now been extended in both directions.

This is an outlet mall, something not usually seen in a downtown area. It was built after the 1984 World's Fair closed down, on land originally occupied by wharf warehouses. In 1996 a cargo ship rammed right into it and got stuck there for a month.
