Idaho is the least visited and arguably the most under-appreciated of the western states - which is too bad, it has a lot to offer.

There is great alpine scenery in the Sawtooths, the largest wilderness in the lower 48 states in the central mountains, fantastic volcanic features at Craters of the Moon, famous ski resorts, and world-class whitewater rivers such as the Salmon. There are also historic traces of Lewis and Clark and the Oregon Trail, plus Shoshone Falls - the continent's largest waterfall.

Maybe the people of Idaho don't want a lot of outsiders sharing their state - after all the best they can come up with as a state slogan (as used on their license plates) is "Famous Potatoes". That always makes me smile.

I have divided the state into two regions:

  • And the Snake River Plain for the broad valley of the mighty Snake and the deserts and mountains flanking it
