360° VR Panoramas of the Northern California Coast, Coast Ranges, and Redwood Highway
The Central Avenue of the Giants
Humboldt Redwoods State Park, California

The stretch of Highway 101 from Dyerville to Miranda contains many stretches of prime old growth redwoods, glimpses of the Eel River, and a few small towns. The old two lane Avenue of the Giants is designated the "scenic alternate" to the freeway and offers a drive in the shade of the trees with many places to stop. It is mostly within Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The park headquarters and two main campgrounds are here, at Burlington.

During the "Thousand Year Flood" of December 1964 the river rose over the highway, washed out all the bridges, and obliterated most of the towns. Stop in Weott and look at the flood level marker on what until then had been the main street of the town. Now look up - 23 feet. The river is across a meadow and scattered trees - fifty feet lower. The town was rebuilt upslope in what is known as Weott Heights.
