Visitor Center at Barataria Preserve

The Barataria Preserve is one of six sites that make up Jean Lafitte National Historical Park. The connection is that the swamps of southern Louisiana were effective hiding places for pirates such as Lafitte.

Bald cypress swamp

Bald cypress swamp

A little further down the trail the swamp forest consists almost entirely of bald cypress, a conifer with deciduous needle-like foliage and characteristic "knees". The swamp water is stained the color of coffee.

Benches in the Barataria Preserve

Benches in the Barataria Preserve

Benches along the Barataria Preserve trail are convenient for birding. Despite inadequate funding the National Park Service always does a classy and excellent job.

Boardwalk trail at Barataria

Boardwalk trail at Barataria

Almost any trail in this environment has to be a boardwalk raised above water level. Canoes can be used on the small crooked waterways and straight man-made canals. But in between the boardwalks and canoe trails it is tough going - black water, deep mud, tangled vegetation, lots of insects, snakes, and alligators.
