360° VR Panoramas of Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and the Gold Country
The Carson Pass Highway
El Dorado National Forest, California

This major Sierra crossing, now Highway 88, was named for Kit Carson, who guided John C. Fremont's 1844 expedition across the mountains here from east to west. It became a pack route then a wagon road known as the Carson Trail.

The highway now serves mostly recreational use, with many cabins and campgrounds and a major ski resort. It is one of only three northern Sierra Passes kept open in winter.
