Colfax has always been a rail town, a support center on the original transcontinental line, and is still an Amtrak stop. It was the eastern terminus for the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Dutch Flat was known for the largest Chinatown after San Francisco. It is now a tiny town in the pine forest with a cluster of historic buildings.
