Allensworth is a unique historical site, a utopian African-American town. It was founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth so black people could prosper and live free of discrimination.

The town of Allensworth flourished briefly, then slowly dwindled to almost a ghost town before state parks took over in the 1970's. A scattering of buildings remain and have been restored.
