360° VR Panoramas of Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and the Gold Country
Copperopolis
Calaveras County, California

As its name implies, Copperopolis came into being because of deposits of copper, not gold. The fluctuating price of copper resulted in multiple booms followed by busts, and no mining takes place there now. There a few historic buildings scattered along Main Street south of Highway 4.

An amazing mirage-like development has been built in the rolling grassland west of the original town. Known as Cooperopolis Town Square, it looks like a perfectly preserved nineteenth century town center, but without a town. As a new urban center it may have some challenges to overcome - both times I have been there it was deserted and most of the store fronts were papered up. But it is right on Highway 4, the only commercial center between Stockton and Angels Camp, and there is a lot of residential development at Tulloch Reeservoir to the south.
