Little known despite its size, Eagle lake is actually the second largest natural lake entirely within California. It is in a basin with internal drainage and has no outlet, so the water is slightly mineralized.
The endangered Eagle Lake trout lives nowhere else. The lake's great wildlife, including eagles, and fishing attract a few visitors, but not many.
