Commercial Street is too narrow to have ever carried much traffic, and now parts of it are closed to motor vehicles. In the early days Montgomery Street was the waterfront and Commercial Street continued as a 2000 foot long pier.

Hallidie Building on Sutter Street

Hallidie Building on Sutter Street

This was one of the world's first steel-frame glass curtain-walled buildings, by San Francisco architect Willis Polk. It was built in 1917-18, renovated in 2010-13. It was named for Andrew Hallidie, the inventor of the cable car.

Lotta's Fountain on Market Street

This ornate drinking fountain was presented to the city of San Francisco in 1875 by Gold Rush-era actress Lotta Crabtree. This is the site of annual commemorations of the 1906 earthquake, every April 18 at 5:12 am.
