Fort Independence historical marker

Fort Independence was created as an army base to protect settlers from hostile Indians. It was abandoned after fifteen years, and is now a reservation for the Fort Independence Community of Paiute Indians.

Mount Whitney Fish Hatchery

The grand Mount Whitney Fish Hatchery was built 1915-17 to produce trout for lakes and streams in the Sierra Nevada. A flash flood in 2007 did extensive damage but the main building was spared.
