Pumping plant on the Mississippi River levee in River RidgeEvery drop of rain that falls on the city of New Orleans (and everywhere nearby) has to be pumped up over a levee into the river or the lake. As a result pumping plants are found strategically placed around the perimeter of the urban areas. In periods of high water, usually in spring or early summer, the river water level may be right at the top of the levee.
