360° VR Panoramas of the Big Island of Hawai'i
Kailua Village
Island of Hawai'i, Hawaii

The village of Kailua was the favored residence of Hawai'ian royalty and site of the first Christian mission on the island. The Hulihe'e Palace on the immediate shoreline and the Mokuaikaua Church across the street attest to this early importance.

Kailua, often known simply as Kona or even Kailua-Kona, next became a tourist destination with the Kona Inn, focused on deep-sea sport fishing, in 1928. IThe King Kamehameha Hotel, first high-rise on the island, was built in 1950. Development has continued, up and down the coast from central Kailua, with hotels, condo developments, and family residences of all sizes.

Predictable afternoon and evening rain keeps Kona green and flowering, but it has more sun than Hilo on the windward side. This has resulted in a shift of tourism from the east to the west coast.
