My own personal buffalo herd

My own personal buffalo herd

My favorite shot of the trip was a pleasant surprise. In an effort to get away from the crowds and get a 360 without an obvious road in it, I parked where there was only room for one vehicle, then hiked a short distance away over a hilltop. When I looked down the other side I saw a small herd of bison (buffalo). For just long enough to take this panorama I was the only one there to see them - it was my own personal buffalo herd.

I estimated as many as a thousand bison in sight

Here in the Lamar Valley, I estimated that maybe a thousand bison were in sight at once. Bison have something of the nobility of elk or wild horses, but also the stolid stupidity of cows. Their sheer bulk is impressive, especially the bulls with their huge heads and manes.

Bison at Soda Butte

Bison at Soda Butte

I passed Soda Cone early in the morning, just in time to see buffalo wallowing in the mud at the base of this hot spring deposit.
