An unusual bloom of marine algae called coccolithophorids turned the waters along the Sunshine coast emerald green in August 2016.

Though some algal blooms are toxic, this one is harmless and created a beautiful, and unusual, emerald color in the deep waters of Howe Sound and the Strait of Georgia.
