When water flow is high in spring and early summer Medicine Lake overflows into the Athabasca River. But when inflows are reduced in late summer and autumn the lake level drops drastically.

Medicine Lake - half full

Medicine Lake - half full

In late August Medicine Lake is drawn well down from its full capacity. Interesting turbidity patterns can be seen on its surface - most water leaves the lake through underground channels. Some distance below the lake's usually dry outflow channel the water reappears in a vertical-walled gorge.
