360° VR Panoramas of Marin and the North Bay Counties
The Marinship Shipyard Area
Sausalito, Marin County, California

In 1942 President Roosevelt called for a massive shipbuilding effort. Industrialist Kenneth Bechtel selected the railroad yard and mudflats north of Sausalito as the site of the Marinship operation. Houses were moved or razed, the hill known as Pine Point blown up and used to fill the bay, and in only three months the first ship was under construction. At its peak more than 20,000 people were employed at the shipyard. In the next three years 93 ships were built - "Liberty ships", oilers, and tankers. When the war ended everything closed down.

Marinship was a ghost town at first, but gradually attracted light industry, artists, and some offices, and the shoreline filled up with houseboats. It is now known principally for the the US Army Corps of Engineers' huge scale model of San Francisco Bay, occupying what was once the shipyard's pattern loft. Originally a research tool on bay circulation, pollution, and sedimentation, the model now also plays an important educational role in bay and estuary ecology.
