Mission Ranch
Carmel, California

Secularization of the California missions resulted in their vast land holdings being sold to private owners. One such property ended up as Carmel Mission Ranch. This small remaing portion of the once vast ranch has a superb location next to the mission, looking across the Carmel River wetlands to Point Lobos.

When condo developers threatened to build here and dredge the mouth of the river for a yacht harbor, local celebrity and Carmel mayor Clint Eastwood stepped in and bought the ranch. Now it is a low key but sophisticated restaurant and hotel. A discrete round of applause for Inspector Callahan, please!
