Mission San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo, California

Mission San Luis Obispo was named for Saint Louis the bishop of Toulouse. (Another California mission honors Saint Louis the King of France (San Luis Rey). It was founded by Father Serra in 1772 in the valley of the bears (Los Osos).

The mission is notable for its L-shaped church. Like most of the missions it deteriorated after secularization and has been restored in several stages. It now stands right at the heart of the charming college town named for it, still a Catholic church.
