Mission San Luis Obispo was named for Saint Louis the bishop of Toulouse. (Another California mission honors Saint Louis the King of France - San Luis Rey). The mission was founded by Father Jumipero Serra in 1772 in the valley of the bears (Los Osos).
This mission is notable for its L-shaped church. Like most of the missions it deteriorated after secularization and has been restored in several stages. It now stands right in the heart of the charming college town named for it, and is still a Catholic church.
