The Royal Presidio Chapel, San Carlos Cathedral
Monterey, California

Monterey was founded as three different things - a presidio (military base), a pueblo (town), and a mission to the Indians. Conflict between the mission and the nearby soldiers led Father Serra to re-found the mission several miles away, in Carmel. The original mission became the Presidio Chapel, which became the first Catholic cathedral in California.

Despite its interesting history and religous importance (it is still a cathedral) the church gets little attention from tourists compared to Carmel Mission.
