The Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias
Nelder Grove Historic Area, Sierra National Forest, California

John Nelder built a cabin in this Sequoia grove in 1875, where he was visited by John Muir, who wrote about their time together. A lumber mill operated in the area of the present campground, logging primarily the huge sugar pines, but many stumps of large Sequoias can be seen. About one hundred mature Sequoias remain, including the impressive Bull Buck Tree, with a 95 foot (29 m) circumference, and the 300 foot (91 m) tall Big Ed. The vigorous and abundant "young" trees in this grove are now over a century old and becoming impressively tall.

Although originally considered for inclusion in Yosemite National Park, the Nelder Grove is protected as part of Sierra National Forest. For decades it was protected by John and Marge Hawksworth, whose work is now carried on by Brenda Negley and the Friends of Nelder Grove. There are trails, historic cabins with exhibits, and a small campground. In September 2017 it was threateed and peripherally damaged by the Railroad Fire.
