360° VR Panoramas of Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and the Gold Country
North Bloomfield
Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park, California

North Bloomfield was the town that served the hydraulic gold mines of San Juan Ridge. Many of the important ninetheenth century buildings along its main street have been restored as part of Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park (no, there is not supposed to be a final "g" on Diggins).

I visited North Bloomfield in the late summer of 2012, when the phony financial crisis in the Division of State Parks had virtually shut down the park. I was allowed to photograph the interiors of several buildings by a generous ranger who felt the public had a right to access, despite what the politicians in Sacramento decreed. It was revealed a few months later that the state parks actually had tens of millions of dollars in their account, unacknowledged and unspent.
