The small portion of Monterey north of the old downtown holds several special places, The old Del Monte Hotel, once a millionaires' retreat and start of the 17-Mile Drive, is now the Naval Postgraduate School. There is a state beach calm enough for swimmers and a beachfront hotel.

Behind the dunes are several brackish lakes, protected as nature reserves and city parks.
