Inspiration Point - not as inspiring as it used to be

Inspiration Point - not as inspiring as it used to be

Early visitors walked out on a rocky promontory here for an inspiring view of Lower Yellowstone Falls, the canyon, and the river. On my first visit to Yellowstone a concrete walkway had been built and the old viewpoint fenced off and crumbling. Now it looks like another retreat may be necessary, and neither the falls nor the river can be seen.

Lookout Point and the Yellowstone River

Lookout Point and the Yellowstone River

The yellow rocks of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River are the origin of the name of the region. Various shades of pastel pink and yellow have been created by the action of hot water on the minerals in the rock. The river is 700 feet below this viewpoint.
