North Shore Trail
Point Lobos State Reserve, California

The North Shore Trail is my favorite at Point Lobos. It follows the clifftops through the pine and cypress forest with short spurs leading to viewpoints. Just before it joins the Cypress Grove trail it passes first above then opposite the Old Veteran cypress.

The trail passes inland of Big Dome, now fenced off. Years ago there was a short steep trail to the flat top of the rock and one could sit looking down through the tree-tops to the dark waters 260 feet below. Slightly inland is forested Whalers Knoll where the nineteenth-century whalers maintained a lookout to spot passing pods of whales.

This rocky near-shore Island is named for the the pigeon guillemot, easily identified by its bright red feet.

The Old Veteran Cypress at Point Lobos

The most photographed tree at Point Lobos, the Old Veteran seems to be clinging precariously to the shattered rock at the top of a crumbling cliff.
