North Fork of the Yuba River

The North Fork of the Yuba River was one pf the richest gold producing areas in the Sierra. Gold was placer mined from its bed in the 1850's, then hard rock mines continued to produce well into the twentieth century. Downieville is the northernmost of the classic Gold Rush towns, though Highway 49 continues on to Sierra City and Sierraville.
