The settlement at Pecos ran along a low ridge top, with several clusters of buildings. This is one of two restored underground kiva chambers in the complex.

KIvas, circular chambers below ground level, entered through a hole in the roof, are common in all the Puebloan settlements. Smaller ones, such as this, were thought to provide a ceremonial space for one extended family or clan. There are actually two restored (i.e. roofed over) kivas at Pecos.

Spanish mission churches followed a traditional plan. There was (almost) always a small room off to the side of the altar where the priests could store their vestments and prepare to officiate at church ceremonies.
