Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
On the Big Sur River, California

One of the most popular state parks, Pfeiffer-Big Sur protects two miles of river and redwood forest. It has a lodge, day use areas, and an enormous campground along the river. Short trails lead to Pfeiffer Falls and Buzzards Roost, and challenging trails in Los Padres National Forest lead up Mount Manuel and the canyon of the Big Sur River.

The Big Sur River is the southernmost important steelhead trout habitat on the coast of California, but it is endangered specifically by intense recreational use in the state park. New bridges, closure of several riverside campsites, restoration of riparian vegetation, and an educational effort on the harmfulness of building gravel dams in the river are part of an effort to bring the species numbers back up.
