360° VR Panoramas of Lake Tahoe, Northern Sierra, and the Gold Country
Placerville
California

Hangtown was an early popular name for this important Gold Rush town, changed to Placerville when it got respectable. It grew to become the third largest city in the state in the 1850's, due both to gold mining and its position on a major trans-Sierra wagon road, and later the Lincoln Highway.

Placerville is a busy place now, on the highway to Lake Tahoe and close enough to Sacramento for commuting. There is an historic main street and other scattered sites, including the Gold Bug Mine.
