360° VR Panoramas of Northern and Central Nevada
Pyramid Lake
On the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, north of Sparks, Nevada

Named by John C. Fremont for the dramatic tufa tower at its south end, this is a magnificent but little-known desert lake. It is huge, almost the size of Lake Tahoe, and belongs entirely to the Pyramid Lake branch of the Piute Indian Tribe. Anoho Island is a wildlife refuge, breeding ground for white pelicans. Huge tufa deposits are found all around the lake, plus hot springs and steam vents at the north end (off-limits to non-Indians).

Camping is allowed all along the west shore and I have spent a number of nights there on my travels across Nevada. More about Pyramid Lake at Wikipedia

On a tufa deposit at Pyramid Lake

Deposits of tufa, created by underwater springs when the lake level was higher, ring this huge high desert lake. The pyramid after which the lake was named by John C. Fremont in 1844, composed of tufa, can be seen directly across the lake from here. The Pyramid area is no longer accessible to the public.

My campsite on the west shore of Pyramid Lake

This is one of my favorite first night camps when driving east from the Bay Area. The entire lake is on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The Paiute Tribe allows camping along the west shore of the lake for a small fee.
