Rio Vista
On the Sacramento River, California

Rio Vista was an important river port, then became a strategic crossing with construction of a bascule bridge in 1919. This was replaced by a lift bridge in 1960.

The Western Railway Museum near Rio Vista specializes in electric interurban trains. It includes five miles of restored track from the Sacramento Northern line and runs regular excursions with vintage rolling stock.

Rio Vista's Riverside Park on the Sacramento River

The present Rio Vista tower bridge with a lift section was built in sections from 1943 to 1960 to replace a 1918 double-bascule bridge. Clearance under the lifted section is 135 feet (41 meters), to accomodate ocean-going ships en route to the Port of Sacramanto.

The Rio Vista Bridge is the furthest downstream on the Sacramento River and carries heavy traffic. It is raised on average about seven times per day to let ships pass, each time generating a delay of about half an hour for vehicle traffic.
