Gumbo Limbo Nature Trail at Royal Palm
Everglades National Park, Florida

The Gumbo-Limbo trail is named after a tropical tree with papery orange bark. The trail loops through a dark jungly hardwood hammock forest of tropical tree species. Here and there a majestic royal palm rises above the forest canopy.Wikipedia: Everglades National Park on Wikipedia.

Live oaks on the Gumbo Limbo nature trail

A few big live oaks remain at Royal Palm along the Gumbo Limbo nature trail. When this area was protected as Royal Palm State Park there were many huge old oaks and towering royal palms. Unfortunately by the time it was transferred to the new national park fire had destroyed the ancient forest.
