The Pacific Crest, Rubicon, and Tahoe Rim Trails
West of Lake Tahoe in Tahoe and Eldorado National Forests, California

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) leads along the ridgetops west of Lake Tahoe, dipping down to cross the Truckee River at Tahoe City, then climbing again and heading north.

The Tahoe Rim Trail follows mostly the same route as the PCT in this area, but bends east at the north and south ends of the lake.

The Rubicon Trail is entirely different, a route famous for its challenging 4WD (four-wheel drive) section, a 22-mile stretch on the west slope of the mountains. The eastern connection to Lake Tahoe is made over Barker Pass and descends by one of two unpaved roads to the lakeshore highway.
