San Carpoforo Creek
North of San Simeon, California

California's famous Highway One, the Cabrillo Highway, clings precariously to cliffs and bluffs for 75 miles from Carmel Highlands to Ragged Point. Then, at San Carpoforo, it drops abruptly to a broad gentle coastal terrace. This is part of the Hearst Ranch, a huge landholding put together by George Hearst and his son William Randolph Hearst, and still held by a family corporation.

For many years coastal access here was blocked by private land, but now it is being added to the state park system. The northernmost park property is here where San Carpoforo Creek hits the ocean. Public land will eventually extend continuously from here to Cambria, enabling a new stretch of coastal trail to be built (it currently runs along the shoulder of the road).
