360° VR Panoramas of Santa Cruz, Monterey, Big Sur and the Central Coast
Seacliff and New Brighton State Beaches
South of Santa Cruz, California

Seacliff Beach is unusual in two ways. First, that long line of huge RV's parked right along the beach, the only such state park campground on the central coast, and charging a premium price. Tent camping is not allowed.

Then there is the concrete ship at the end of the pier. Built in 1917 as a tanker, it was towed here and beached in 1929 as a tourist attraction. I can remember as a child walking all the way around its upper deck, a popular fishing spot. But storms and the marine environment have taken their toll - the ship was fenced off, broke in two, and will eventually disappear. It acts as sort of a man-made reef and hosts a rich marine ecosystem.

New Brighton was the site of a nineteenth century Chinese fishing village and became a park in 1933. It has a large bluff-top campground with a steep path down to the beach.
