360° VR Panoramas of the Northern California Coast, Coast Ranges, and Redwood Highway
Shelter Cove
West of Garberville, California

Shelter Cove is an odd place, not quite a town, and the only settlement of any kind on the Lost Coast. It dates from a real estate development in the 1960's and features a combined airport/golf course - the runway runs right through the middle of town (fore!) There is a boat launching area in the cove and in season fishermen haul surprisingly large boats on trailers over the mountains. The cast-iron lighthouse building from Cape Mendocino has been relocated to here.

There are several bed and breakfasts and motels, a couple of coffee shops and sometimes a restaurant. We stayed there once and were amused at the sign in our motel room "no cleaning fish in bathroom sink". They wouldn't bother to say it if it wasn't a problem.
